Wendell - I couldn't help laughing at your English teacher comment as I sit here in Vietnam teaching finance but also holding a TEFL cert! Hope I get to meet you when in Taipei for TADTE.
It was a cheap shot on my part, but after 25 years I've seen a lot of it. When I was in Hong Kong in the old days when the Brits still ruled I was drinking in the Old China Hand and one of the old Brits who was born in Hong Kong looked across the bar at a well dressed man with cufflinks and said to me "FILTH"...I was confused but then he explained, with that special radar they had, FILTH meant Failed In London, Try Hong Kong...lol. But honestly we all have folks who face dilemmas in their lives where teaching English in Asia is a far better choice than the obvious. Everyone deserves a restart in life, but what happens is many seem to get worse here (or maybe they never had their shit together in the first place).
