Taiwan's First Female Sniper
G.I. Jane
By Wendell Minnick (Whiskey Mike) 顏文德
TAIPEI - I have interacted with different sniper units in the Marine Corps’ Amphibious Reconnaissance Patrol (ARP), Army’s Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion 101, and the Army’s special sniper units, but this is the first time a female has been included in this skillset.
The below photographs, video and press release are from the Military News Agency (MNA) under the Ministry of National Defense (MND) taken during an exercise recently.
Also included below is a rare MND sniper press release with ballistics and training details.
Please note the rifle and scope are new and locally built.
Female snipers in history appear to have made their mark only in the Soviet Army, even if they do appear in history books in other wars there is no comparison to the Russians.
During World War II, Lyudmila Pavlichenko (“Lady Death”) killed 309 German soldiers. There was also Natalya Kovshova with roughly 160 and Roza Shanina with around 50 German kills.
The female sniper below, identified only as “Jane” by the MND, also has an unidentified male spotter.
A note to reader: all photographs for public use; feel free to use them for your own publications.
“Jane” is a Staff Sergeant of the Army's Taitung Defense Command [East Coast]. She has served for 13 years and is veteran sniper. She won the first national sniper competition by the Ministry of Defense. During the exercise, she has firm eyes, wearing a ghillie suit, holding a T93K1 [7.62mm bolt-action] light sniper rifle, with TS95 10x sniper lens, simulating long-range sniper drill. - Military News Agency.
The new T93K1 was manufactured under a US $31 million contract for the next-generation sniper rifle. The contract was awarded in May 2020 to the Armaments Bureau’s 205th Arsenal. The TS95 made its first appearance at the 2018 Kaohsiung International Maritime and Defense Exhibition under the 401st Factory. Please consult Taiwan Army Weapons and Equipment (2022) for further details.
