US Nuclear Weapons Deployments in Taiwan
The Forgotten Balance of Terror
By Wendell Minnick (Whiskey Mike) 顏文德
TAIPEI - One might be surprised all these years later that the U.S. deployed nuclear weapons on Taiwan.
This includes as early as the Eisenhower administration and as late as the early 1970s.
The U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty provided Taiwan with America’s nuclear umbrella, should China attempt to invade.
This ended when the US-Taiwan Defense Command was shuttered after the U.S. switched diplomatic relations from Taipei to Beijing.
Those interested in the U-2 spy plane program and other covert CIA air operations out of Taiwan, I recommend reading Chris Pocock’s The Black Bats: CIA Spy Flights Over China From Taiwan, 1951-1969 and William Leary’s Perilous Missions: Civil Air Transport and CIA Covert Operations in Asia.
