New Taiwan President's Military Background
Lai's Kinmen Service
By Wendell Minnick (Whiskey Mike) 顏文德
TAIPEI - Taiwan’s new President, LAI “William” Ching-te (賴清德), served in the Army on Kinmen Island during the early 1980s.
Lai, born 1958, became Taiwan’s President on 20 May 2024, replacing Tsai Ing-wen.
There is hope that Lai might be more sympathetic to the military. His predecessor, Tsai Ing-wen, aggravated the military with reductions in pensions, extended service time before retirement, berated the military for accidents, and devastated the Military Police Command (MPC) from 20,000 to 3,000 personnel (5,000 if you include reservists).
