Taiwan's Yellow Submarine
CSBC Can't Keep A Secret
By Wendell Minnick (Whiskey Mike) 顏文德
TAIPEI - Taiwan’s China Shipbuilding Corporation (CSBC) clearly has a weird sense of humor.
CSBC has a celebratory liquor flask of a yellow submarine representing the first prototype now under construction in Kaohsiung.
Plans are for six-to-eight diesel-electric submarines.
It is unclear if the color is in reference to the Beatles song or not, but one supposes the contents are far more important to the six who imbibe the solution.
Construction began on 24 November 2020 and there are expectations the 1168 submarine will be one of two initial prototypes before operational platforms are manufactured.
The problem is testing the platforms for reliability. Such facilities can be found in Japan and the United States, but it is unclear if Taiwan will be able to transport them to either country without Chinese naval interference.
