Taiwan's New Defense Innovation Unit
Focus on Technology Readiness Level 7-9
By Wendell Minnick (Whiskey Mike) 顏文德
TAIPEI - On 11 July 2024, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) issued a press release announcing the creation of the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) within the Ministry of National Defense (MND).
It is unclear to me why the DPP would make an announcement on this issue rather than the MND, but I can attest that I have never seen the DPP steal the thunder from the MND before in this manner.
The video link, in Chinese, is a media Q&A with the new Minister of National Defense, Koo Li-hsiung (Wellington Koo).
Koo is the first civilian Minister to take the office. Koo had served as a second lieutenant for an army transport landing craft from 1980-1982 on one of the outer islands. He did serve as secretary-general of the National Security Council in 2020 until his appointment as Defense Minister in 2024. For most of his career, Koo was a lawyer and earned a master's degree in public service law from New York University.
The below press release is from the DPP, not MND:
