Taiwan Mirage Pilot Rescue
MND Video
By Wendell Minnick (Whiskey Mike) 顏文德
TAIPEI - A Taiwan Dassault Mirage 2000-5 fighter jet crashed at 8:35pm on 10 September during a training exercise over waters off Hsinchu. The pilot, Hsieh Pei-hsun (謝沛勳), ejected safely. He was rescued by a Coast Guard vessel.
Hsinchu Air Base is home of the 2nd (499th) Tactical Fighter Wing (41st, 42nd, and 48th Tactical Fighter Group). Taiwan procured 60 Mirage fighters in the 1980s and the aging aircraft might be retired, though no final decision has been made.
Taiwan will begin taking delivery of 66 F-16V Block 70 fighters later this year.
Over the decades, Taiwan’s military has had numerous problems with acquiring follow-on parts and equipment, especially missiles due to Beijing pressure on Paris.
