Taiwan Army Amphibious Reconnaissance Class 161 Graduates

Grueling Special Operations’ Final Training Phase

By Wendell Minnick (Whiskey Mike) 顏文德

TAIPEI - The final test of the Army’s Amphibious Reconnaissance Reserve Training Class 161, known as the “Tough Man Road,” was conducted at Liluo Camp on May 22, 2025.

The Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion (ARB 101) is stationed across four outlying islands: Penghu (Command and Control), Kinmen, Matsu, and Dongyin. The battalion comprises approximately four Company (with 3-4 Platoons).

Often compared to the U.S. Navy SEALs—though lacking direct combat experience—ARB 101 is regarded as an elite unit.

Dongyin Island is considered their most dangerous post. It hosts the only missile base within striking distance of China’s northeastern region.

Many refer to Dongyin as “Taiwan’s Alamo,” a granite fortress that China would have to seize by force to secure control over the island’s 50 missile silos.

I once visited the island with the Taiwan Army, and it reminded me of the 1961 film The Guns of Navarone.
