PLA Naval Aviation Reorganization 2023
PLAN Transfers to PLAAF
By Wendell Minnick (Whiskey Mike)
A new paper by Roderick Lee at the China Aerospace Studies Institute drills down on why there has been a major restructuring in China’s airpower. The real question is whether this is in response to a Taiwan scenario?
In early 2023, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) began transferring PLA Navy Aviation (PLAN) units to the PLA Air Force (PLAAF). By mid-2023, the PLA transferred the majority of PLAN fighter, bomber, radar, air defense, and airfield units to the PLAAF. In total, the PLA transferred at least three fighter brigades, two bomber regiments, three radar brigades, three air defense brigades, and numerous airfield stations.
I urge all interested in this topic to download the PDF here:
Roderick Lee is the Director of Research at the Air University’s China Aerospace Studies Institute (CASI). Prior to joining CASI, he served as an analyst with the United States Navy covering Chinese naval forces. He earned his Master of Arts degree from The George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs.
