TAIPEI - Grant Newsham is no think tanker walling himself away from the cold realities of the world with stacks of books on shelves like bricks of a prison cell.
Newsham is indeed bookish. But equally with 30 years of boots-on-the-ground and face-to-face interactions with the Japan and Taiwan military.
Here is why you should read his 2024 predictions:
Retiring as a Colonel with the U.S. Marine Corps after 30 years (1984-2014), serving both in Japan and as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer in Washington (1988- 1997) on Japan, his primary focus and encouragement has been programs to upgrade the amphibious capabilities of the Japanese Marine Corps.
Since 2013, Newsham has been with the Japan Forum for Strategic Studies and wrote an important book on China’s invasion plans for Taiwan: When China Attacks (2023).

Ominous indeed. Can’t say I disagree with him as this opportunity to take over has been building up for a long time and China has been bidding its time. Waiting until there was (is) an opportunity. And that opportunity is so very close.
