Green Berets Advise Taiwan Army Frogmen to Reposition
Will Dongyin Remain Taiwan’s Alamo?
By Wendell Minnick (顏文德)
TAIPEI - The U.S. Green Berets have recommended that Taiwan’s special operation forces on the outer islands restation to Penghu Island, just off the coast of southwest Taiwan.
The Taiwan Army Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion 101 (ARB 101) are assigned to the islands of Dongyin, Kinmen, Matsu, and Penghu.
According to local Taiwan media reports, U.S. Army- 1st Special Forces Group (1st SFG), after a three-year observation and evaluation program have advised the ARB 101 to move, minus training facilities, to Penghu off Taiwan’s southwest coast and within territorial waters.
Today, the outer islands are of no strategic value and are undefendable, except for Dongyin, northeast of Matsu, and dubbed the Alamo due its isolation, granite fortress-like defenses, and heavy armaments. Dongyin is armed to the teeth with both Hsiung Feng (Brave Wind) anti-ship missiles and Tien Kung (Sky Bow) air defence missiles
.The presence of the Green Berets became an open-secret in Taiwan via a scandal Christmas 2023 when three Green Berets visiting Mu Muem Massage got into a brawl with three local Taiwanese. The fight continued outside the building where local police arrested the Taiwanese. Despite requests by the Green Berets to drop charges against the Taiwanese, local media caught wind of the fight after the Taiwanese received six months in jail.
