Congratulations Dr. Sheena Chestnut
Politics of the North Korean Diaspora
By Wendell Minnick (Whiskey Mike) 顏文德
TAIPEI - Congratulations Dr. Sheena Chestnut for her new book, Politics of the North Korean Diaspora, published with Cambridge University Press (January 2024/USD $22).
She is an Associate Professor, University of Texas-Austin (& for 2023-24, U.S. Army War College). She just jointed as a Nonresident Scholar, Carnegie Endowment.
The book tells (part of) the story of the North Korean diaspora - the small handful of people who have escaped the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and resettled/rebuilt their lives abroad, in South Korea or beyond.
It argues that NK views this diaspora as a threat, and goes to great lengths to dissuade people from leaving, to discredit them once they do, and then to deter them from criticizing or opposing Pyongyang from abroad, often through coercion and transnational repression, even assassination.
Despite this, North Korean emigres are highly engaged democratic citizens in the countries where they resettle, including the U.S., and have had a significant impact in global advocacy.
The book argues that regime type, often left out of the study of migration/diaspora politics, needs to be systematically accounted for if we want to fully understand the global dimensions of contemporary authoritarianism.
