The Army’s 564th Armored Brigade recently underwent a physical fitness and combat skills evaluation conducted by Army Command Headquarters. The assessment included tests such as standard weapon firing, field grenade throwing, the 500-meter/546 yard obstacle course, and comprehensive physical training.

Despite the intense heat [average that week was 31°C/88°F with 63% humidity], all participating personnel gave their best effort, striving to achieve outstanding results for their unit [Note: the 564th is under the southern 8th Army, Alian District, Kaohsiung].

ABOVE: 8th Army. After 30 years in Taiwan, I still find it baffling that the military continues to use imagery linked to China—such as the Great Wall—on its emblems. Despite widespread public rejection of these symbols for political reasons, the armed forces have yet to cultivate a new ethos that reflects Taiwan’s evolving national identity.

Brigade Commander Major General Kao encouraged every soldier to continue honing their physical fitness and combat skills to lay a solid foundation for training and combat readiness, thereby building a highly capable fighting force [Major General in the Taiwan system is a one star].
