China’s Elite Paratroopers
8.1 Brigade
By Wendell Minnick (Whiskey Mike) 顏文德
TAIPEI - Being a “defense correspondent” gives one unique opportunities not afforded to mainstream journalists.
Recently, I stumbled upon a 2012 brochure for the China Airshow (Zhuhai Airshow) detailing the 8.1 Parachute Brigade that serves as an elite training unit for special operations and as a demonstration team for aerobatic skydiving performances.
This brochure is unique, though dated, as it is the only one I have ever been given at any of the five Airshow China events attended.
The below brochures are keyworded for easier searches. Researchers and subscribers are free to use any of the material in their own research, including photographs. Please note source of material.
This posting is for the researcher and for those interested in all things airborne and special operations.
For the record, Taiwan expects a significant airborne strike force to hit Taiwan to secure political institutions, communication hubs, and airports (such as Taoyuan) to allow for easier conquest.

ABOVE: Note there is a Z18 helicopter on the upper right of interest. This platform is normally in service in the navy for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and electronic warfare (EW) missions. Though it would be the perfect choice for a medium-lift platform for airborne exercises and perhaps even insertion of special operation forces into Taiwan. See book: Chinese Helicopters (2016).
Other Chinese land warfare books of interest might be Chinese Army Vehicles: Armored Personnel Vehicles, Trucks and Logistics Support Vehicles, Chinese Tanks and Mobile Artillery, Chinese Rocket Systems: Multiple Launch Rocket Systems, and mobile SAM systems: Chinese Land-based Air Defense Systems. For asymmetric options for the insertion of special operations units consider: Chinese Seaplanes, Amphibious Aircraft and Aerostats/Airships.
