BLAST From The Past #2
Asia In Review with Bill Sharp
By Wendell Minnick (Whiskey Mike) 顏文德
TAIPEI - In June 2017, I participated in a two segment video interview, “Will Taiwan Fight?”, with Bill Sharp, host of the now defunct Asia in Review (March 2009 - December 2018), broadcast from Honolulu, Hawaii.
Asia in Review was a weekly, one hour TV show dedicated to substantive discussion of contemporary events in the Asia-Pacific region. For Oahu (Hawaii) TV viewing audiences, Asia in Review was broadcast Tuesday evenings from 7-8 PM on Channel 54. Within the intelligence community, Pacific Command, and academia, it was a much beloved program and considered required viewing; despite the fact that the program was produced by a relatively unknown Tv station in Honolulu.
Guests were some of the top movers and shakers of the U.S military, intelligence community and diplomatic corp. These included Richard Armitage, Ian Easton, Scott Ellinger, and James Fanell.
Though Sharp only brandishes his academic credentials, including Harvard, he was awarded the Bronze Star during the Vietnam War where he served in military intelligence: 1968-1970 posted in Phan Thiet and Nha Trang, 2nd Battalion, 525th Military Intelligence Group.
The 525th was responsible for monitoring human intelligence (HUMINT) operations in the highland provinces of the 2 Corps area. For three months during the war, Sharp provided daily intelligence briefs to a U.S. Navy SEAL team on their missions.
Too many Washington researchers in DC think tanks methodically stack books like bricks on the walls of their office; barricading themselves against reality. Hiding behind their keyboards, praying the sounds of their fingers tapping on the keys will fool their peers walking down the hall past their cells.
Sharp‘s skillsets command both pen and sword. His list of adventures and scholarship are unequaled.
Though these two videos are from June 2017, many of my opinions have remained unchanged.
BELOW: Though undeserved, I did receive the patch and a hat as an “honorary member” (for at least not dying on the course).
