TAIPEI - Ten years ago, I was attending Taiwan’s defense expo, the Taiwan Aerospace and Defense Technology Exhibition (TADTE), when a Taiwanese expat living in Washington for most of his adult life simplified the problem in one comment: Washington’s Kung Fu is just not good enough against Beijing’s.
He was talking about everything from politics, economics, trade, and international affairs. Today, I suspect he would include the military in his quip about how Washington continues to misread the tea leaf of Taiwan.
The problem is cognitive tactical and strategic frameworks. China’s is far older and tested and not to mention more complex.
The U.S. has been unlucky in love and war, but keeps going back for more. America loved Vietnam to death. Then Afghanistan and Iraq.
This comparison will best illustrate the differences and why Washington will lose Taiwan to Mother China:
