Asia’s F-22 Raptors vs. China
Patch Circulates to Annoy Beijing
By Wendell Minnick (Whiskey Mike) 顏文德
TAIPEI - The above “Weekend” or “Hollywood” 199th Fighter Squadron patch is bouncing around the Internet and is not an official patch.
These types of patches are often produced by fans (fan patches) or internally without the consent of the air force for amusement.
The patch has the Hawaiian State flag on it, the balloon that flew over the U.S. and later shot down by an F-22, and Winnie the Pooh (the nickname of Chinese leader Xi Jinping) being impaled by a missile.
Asia has two squadrons to address a Chinese invasion of Taiwan and any other problems, such as North Korea.
Most likely, in a Taiwan conflict, these two squadrons would redeploy to Okinawa and/or Guam.
A note to the reader, the U.S. only built 198 of these 5th Generation fighter aircraft. There will be no replacements if shot down, and the U.S. did not share the technology with allies (unlike the F-35). The F-22 cannot be compared to the F-35 in technological sophistication or killing power. It truly is a Velociraptor.
The 199th Fighter Squadron, 154th Wing, under the Hawaii Air National Guard at Pearl Harbor, Hickam, Honolulu, is one of two F-22 squadrons that will see direct combat with China’s military during a war over Taiwan.
The F-22A Raptor stealth fighter squadron is known as the Mytai Fighters and their mascot is the Kuka'ilimoku.
The other squadron of F-22As that China has to worry about is the 525th Fighter Squadron, 3rd Operations Group, at Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Known as the Bulldogs, I was lucky to interact with them at the 2016 Singapore Airshow during a visit.
