Allies Threaten Five Eyes

Potential Divorce Shakes Antennas Across Asia

By Wendell Minnick (Whiskey Mike) 顏文德

TAIPEI - The Five Eyes network is now under threat after four primary members (UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) discuss an actual divorce from the United States on sharing intelligence gathered via signals intelligence (SIGINT) and electronic intelligence (ELINT) at such legendary sites as Australia’s Pine Gap.

You have to read Desmond Ball’s tome The Ties That Bind: Intelligence Cooperation Between the UKUSA Countries - the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand (1990) to realize the extent of a relationship that has served to protect Western countries from Cold War nuclear war, terrorism, and, honestly, to spy on one another when convenient.

The problem is the Five Eyes is actually more than just five countries. Antenna eavesdropping facilities are stationed in former UK colonies and American allies/friends in Asia.

For the US the National Security Agency (NSA) has facilities in South Korea, Japan, including Ryukus Island chain, and the joint venture between the US-Taiwan at the Pintun Li antenna facility.

For the U.K. the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) has a close relationship with Australia and New Zealand. When Hong Kong was handed over to China, the UK was forced to close Chung Hom Kok near Stanley Fort, with some of that transferred to Pine Gap.

Singapore via Head Quarters (HQ) Signals and Commands System and the Signal Institute (SI) with facilities Stagmont Camp, Mandai Hill Camp and Selarang Camp, and an unusual antenna facility on Tekong Island, serve SIGINT/ELINT duties.

BELOW: Mandai Hill Camp, facility is marked as a water tank, but the suspicious green circle next to it looks like a circularly disposed antenna array (CDAA).
